EDFI Renewable Energy Transition (EDFI RET) is a joint guarantee programme designed by the members of the EDFI Association and EDFI Management Company under EFSD+, the financing arm of EU Global Gateway.
The program aims to support European Development Finance Institutions (EDFIs) and their co-investors in addressing the ongoing energy access gap in emerging markets. The focus of the program is on the following renewable energy sectors:
- renewable energy generation via on-grid solutions, independent power producers (IPP) projects
- off-grid and mini-grid solutions (e.g. decentralised /distributed energy)
- energy transmission and distribution infrastructure and facilities,
- energy storage solutions
- green hydrogen value chains (production, distribution, storage) and other innovative technologies, and / or
- energy transition (including e-mobility, RE transport, sustainable ICT sector, sustainable waste and supporting decarbonisation of heavy industries).
The EDFI RET programme is designed to focus on renewable energy exclusively by offering EFSD+ guarantee coverage to de-risk EDFIs’ equity and debt financing. This will encourage additional investments from both public and private co-investors.
Why support EDFI RET?
Today, over 773 million people still lack access to electricity and even more lack access to stable energy, of which 590 million are living in Sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 80% of the global population, 152 million in Asia and others in rural parts of Latin-America. EDFI RET will help accelerate renewable energy investments, implement SDG8 and help achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goals by supporting renewable energy private enterprises through the various stages of their development, thereby bridging the gap in access to financing, stimulating the private sector, and mobilising investors.
EDFI RET will also align with key EU policy priorities, including the Global Gateway Climate and Energy objectives, the regional TEI Africa: Green Energy Initiative, TEI Green Transition – EUROCLIMA for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Green Initiative TEI in Partnership with ASEAN/South-East Asia.
