New ElectriFI development finance facility to support Source Energia’s renewable energy pipeline in Mozambique
The EU-funded ElectriFI, managed by EDFI Management Company (EDFI MC) facility will help reduce early-stage development risks and prepare Source Energia’s pipeline for future investment by development finance institutions.
Maputo, Mozambique, 11 June 2026 — EDFI Management Company, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Mozambique and Source Energia today announced the signing of a flexible development loan facility for Source Energia, a Mozambican renewable energy developer, to support the development of a renewable independent power producer pipeline in Mozambique.
The signing took place during the RENMOZ event in Mozambique, in the presence of representatives of EDFI Management Company, Source Energia, and the European Union Delegation.
Ludovic Durel, Energy Transition Programme Officer to Delegation of the European Union stated “This signing is a strong example of how European-backed development finance can support sustainable infrastructure and private sector-led growth in partner countries. Renewable energy is central to Mozambique’s development and to the European Union’s Global Gateway priorities.”
Established in 2015, Source Energia is a management-owned renewable energy developer. The company develops, finances and implements renewable energy projects with the objective of supporting economic growth, reducing carbon emissions and improving access to clean energy in Mozambique.
“This investment reflects exactly the role development finance should play supporting strong local developers at a critical stage, helping reduce early-stage risks, and mobilising further capital for projects that can deliver long-term impact,” Corentin Billiet, Senior Investment Officer, EDFI Management Company. “Source Energia combines local expertise, a strong execution track record and a pipeline with significant potential to expand renewable energy generation in Mozambique.”
The facility will provide early development-stage financing helping the company advance a pipeline of renewable wind, solar PV and battery storage projects in Mozambique, positioning the country as an emerging renewable energy hub for Southern Africa.
Mathikizana Matos, Senior Development Engineer at Source Energia concluded “This facility is an important milestone for Source Energia and for the development of renewable energy in Mozambique. It will support the company as it ramps up its development activities towards a platform requiring up to US$10 million in development funding and US$50 million in construction capital, as part of a broader 7-year, 700 MW (US$ 700 million) growth strategy involving a group of DFI funder and IPP partners. As a locally based developer, we are committed to building projects that are technically strong, commercially viable and aligned with the country’s long-term energy needs.”
By strengthening Source Energia’s development pipeline and supporting projects through the critical development stages towards financial close, ElectriFI’s instrument helps create the foundation for future participation by development finance institutions and strategic investors.
